John has always had a passion for cooking up a storm, pouring good wine and entertaining his friends. This passion enabled him to aggressively make a switch from his sales career and open up The Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar in his own neighborhood. A line cook stint at the former Meze restaurant in Charlestown and a sous chef position at Bear Creek Mountain Club in Plymouth, VT gave him the necessary experience to work in a commercial kitchen. He also attended the 14 week wine program at Boston University and attended the culinary program at Bunker Hill Community College.
John works closely with his Chefs on developing the menu and personally shops for much of his seasonal menu and daily specials. On most nights you will see John recommending wine and playing host to his guests.
John grew up locally in Nahant, MA and North Conway NH and lived in Charlestown for 18 years. On his rare days off, he enjoys a competitive round of golf at his home course Ferncroft CC. He is also currently working on his cookbook at his new home.
In the fall of 2010, John contracted a very rare auto immune virus ‘Guillian Barre Syndrom” that left him completely paralyzed. He spent four months between MGH hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. After spending another four months at home and rehabbing at Journey Forward in Canton, he returned to the Bistro on his own two feet. Today he is playing golf again and is close to breaking to 80. He continues his rehab through his personal trainer Gerry Healy of Charlestown. He started a foundation for the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital of Charlestown, “The Nerves of Steel Foundation” and holds a “Putt Putt” Party as well as a wine dinner to raise money for his foundation. The Bistro is located just a “par 5” from Spaulding and John likes to visit patients who have had similar unfortunate experiences as him.
He is also much involved in the Charlestown Community. John serves as an Overseer at the USS Constitution Museum, served on the board of the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce and also and serves on the board of directors for "Friends of the Navy Yard". One of his most enjoyable charitable endeavor is being the guest chef and on the planning committee for Charlestown Boys and Girls Club Annual "Patriots Game Day" Fundraiser. This past year he cooked 150 “Bronco” Bison Short Ribs for the Patriots vs Denver game.
